pet Snow Melt

You’ve cleared the driveway using your snow blower, and now it is time to clear the residue. Usually, you’d throw some ice melt on the ground and call it a day, but what about the health of our furry friends?

Snow melt is usually made of a combination of chemicals, not all of which are considered pet safe. Some can cause irritation of the paws, while others contain products that can make your pet ill if they drink the melted ice water.

So, what do you want to look for?

It’s important to know that not all products marked as pet safe are pet safe. Look for products that are largely made of a product called “Urea”, which is sometimes marketed as Carbonyl Diamide or Carbamide Resin. In short, urea is a bio-degradable chemical often used in commercial fertilizers. However, although urea will not harm your pet’s paws, it is not as effective at melting snow and ice than other commercial products.

An alternative is to make a homemade remedy made from a combination of rock salt and coarse sand. This mixture will not only encourage ice melt, but makes it difficult for more to form, or for snow to settle. It is also (largely) environmentally friendly, and can be created in bulk for a relatively low cost.
