Winterizing Your Roof

It’s that time of year again when the winds howl and the snow comes hammering down. With all that nasty weather pulling at the shingles, winterizing your roof is essential seasonal maintenance that will benefit you in the long run. Here’s how to get ahead of it (before it starts costing you money).

1. Give it a once over
Have a quick look from the ground and check for basics like missing shingles, dents, depressions, or signs of decay.

2. Get up close and personal
Sure, you can see a lot of superficial wear and tear from ground level, but to really understand the condition of your roof, go up (safely) on a ladder. Look for weaknesses and cracks on the surface, as well as any unusual depressions.

3. Check the gutters
And while you are up there, remove debris from the gutters and ensure there is room for unobstructed waterflow.

4. Clear overhanging branches
Storms love trees. Prevent one visiting you this winter by cutting back any overhanging branches. Consider removing a tree if it poses a hazard.

5. Check for damage from pests
Birds and small mammals (squirrels in particular) like to use roofs for nesting. But while nests bring life into the world, they can also take the life out of your roof. Look for holes and weak points that could leak water.

6. The attic
Next, go inside and check the interior of the roof – the attic. Look for visible damage, including mold.

7. Checking the caulking and seals
Leaks or no leaks? Keep the cold and damp out by ensuring all caulking is tight and continuous.
