Winter Wonderland: A Guide to Winterizing Your Home for the Coziest Season Yet
As the temperature drops and snowflakes start to fall, it’s time to transform your home into a cozy winter haven.
Go big or go home! Saint Patrick’s Day is one of the biggest shindigs of the year, so we decided to create “The Ultimate Guide to Saint Patrick’s Day in Rhode Island”… so you can get shamrocked in style. Plus… little fun fact: Rhode Island ranks fifth in the country in terms of Irishness, with 17.9% of residents claiming Irish ancestry.
To understand Irish culture, you need to understand where the Irish in America came from. There were many waves of migration, but one of the largest was in the mid-19th century. After The Great Hunger (An Gorta Mór in Irish) devastated Ireland, 1.5 million Irish fled to North America. Many came to New England.
The Irish Famine Memorial is located on River Walk in Providence. Three Irish figures sit on a stone base, bordered by a walkway that leads to a commemorative wall. Each sculpted figure symbolically commemorates the journey from hunger, to migration, to prosperity. To learn more about the Great Hunger and Irish immigration, check out this resource.
Next, get up close and personal with Irish sports! Hurling is a fast-paced game that combines ice hockey (sticks, fights, masks) with soccer (grass field, uniforms, goal posts), and baseball (the ball). It’s a popular pastime in much of Ireland, and the Providence Hurling Club has taken the sport to heart. Go join and become part of the team!
Learn more about those Irish people who moved here, and particularly those who moved to Newport, at the Museum of Newport Irish History. There is also a resource library for all you eager anthropologists!
As they say in Ireland, in Rhode Island there are more Irish-themed pubs and bars than “you can shake a stick at.” Some of the most popular spots are in Providence, including Murphy’s, Muldowney’s, Patrick’s Pub, and McBride’s. But also, check out Arigna Irish Pub & Coal Fire Kitchen, if you want to add some tasty grub (and wood-fired pizza) to your experience.
For some great sounding traditional music given a Stateside folky twist, go check-out singer-songwriter Brian Twohey. He plays Irish music across the state – find his dates on Facebook.
One of the biggest parades in the region is held in Newport. Join in the excitement of the 66th Annual Newport Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on March 12! PS… and if it’s big you’re looking for, then you might want to make the trek to Boston on March 20 and experience one of the world’s leading parades.
And, of course, there is the annual parade through the capital! This year the event is on March 19, and kicks-off at 7am for a full day of fun!
That’s our Ultimate Guide to Saint Patrick’s Day! Did you go experience any of these places? Let us know!
