How to Keep Your Property (and Loved Ones) Safe in Winter Storms

As a nationwide storm front moves across the country this week, here are some essential tips to help keep your property (and loved ones) safe this winter.

1. Make sure you have all the supplies and materials that you might need for the storm, such as flashlights, batteries, food, water, blankets, etc. It is also helpful to have a backup power source in case of a power outage.

2. Ensure your home is insulated properly and sealed off from cold air coming indoors. Install weather stripping around doors and windows to prevent drafts from entering. Check for gaps around pipes, wires, chimneys, etc., and seal them off as required.

3. Have your heating system checked before the storm arrives to ensure it is working properly and won’t leave you in the cold during a power outage. Make sure you have enough fuel for your furnace, and consider investing in a generator as an additional backup.

4. Clean out your gutters, remove debris from the roof, and trim any overhanging branches that could become damaged during the storm. This will help to avoid water leaking into your home or tree limbs crashing through windows and roofs.

5. Make sure your vehicles are tuned up and in good working condition so you can get around during the storm if necessary. Keep a winter emergency kit stored in your vehicle as well, with items such as jumper cables, shovels, blankets, and an extra coat or set of clothes.

6. Gather up any important documents and store them safely in waterproof containers. This includes insurance policies, birth certificates, passports, bank statements and more.

7. Be sure to stay informed during the storm by listening to your local media outlets for updates on weather conditions, road closures and other important information. Make sure to follow any instructions given by officials such as evacuation orders or shelter-in-place advisories.
