Preparing Your Snowblower for Winter

Preparing Your Snowblowing

They sit in your garage all spring, summer, and fall, out of sight and out of mind, but the season of the mighty snowblower is upon us and it’s time to dust off the cobwebs and get it ready to rock. These essential tips will help get your snowblower ready for the winter.

1) Check for Damage.
Easy one first. Take a few minutes to check your snowblower for visible damage, including rust, cracked parts, and essential moving parts.

2) Tighten Loose Bolts and Levers
Mechanics need to be well maintained. Check all the moving parts for loose parts, and tighten anything that seems weak.

3) Check Tire Pressure
A snowblower’s tire pressure should be 17psi., which is the ideal pressure for working in snow and ice.

4) Flip the Skid Shoes
A bit like rotating tires on a car, the skid shoes should be rotated each season to ensure even wear and tear.

5) Inspect the Belts
Again, just like a car, your snowblower’s belts are essential pieces of kit. Ensure they are robust and do not have any noticeable signs of wear or damage. If they do, replace immediately.

6) Fill the Gas Tank. …
A no-brainer in many ways, but the last thing you want is to break down halfway through your snow clearance.

7) Check Oil
Again, a basic consideration, but a key step in the process. Make sure your oil is topped up and clean before use.

8) Install a New Spark Plug
It never hurts to install a new spark plug after almost a year not being used, especially as you are about to head out into some nasty, cold weather.
