How to Deal With Fall Leaves

One of the best things about fall in Rhode Island is all the beautiful leaves that cover the ground. While they may be a pain to clean up, there are actually a lot of ways you can use them! Here are some ideas on what to do with all those fallen leaves:

  • Use them as mulch in your garden
This will help protect your plants from the cold weather and also help retain moisture in the soil.
  • Make leaf rubbings
This is a great activity for kids (and adults!) All you need is a piece of paper and a crayon. Place the piece of paper over the leaf, and rub the side of the crayon over it. The leaf’s veins will transfer onto the paper, creating a cool design.
  • Use them in crafts
You can make all sorts of things out of leaves, like wreaths, garlands, and even Thanksgiving turkey decorations.
  • Natural air freshener
Place some leaves in a bowl and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. The leaves will help diffuse the scent and make your home smell wonderful.
  • Leaf-shaped confetti
This is perfect for decorating tables or using in invitations. Just punch out some leaf shapes from construction paper or tissue paper and you’re all set.
  • Dried for potpourri
You can even add a few drops of essential oil to the mix for a pleasant scent.
  • Natural fertilizer
Just compost them and add them to your garden beds in the spring.
  • Remember: Burning leaves is not an option
It is illegal in many places and can be dangerous. The best way to dispose of fall leaves is to rake them up and bag them for garbage pick-up or take them to a local dump.
  • And of course…
If you have a lot of leaves, you can even create a giant leaf pile to jump in – just make sure to rake them up afterwards!
